Quantum dance of feelings and light,
Guided by the inner turmoil, I FIGHT.
I feel alone, I fight.
Guided by the inner turmoil, I FIGHT. (echo)
I feel alone,
I long for the past…
A past I don’t recall.
And I don’t know why.
ECHO!
Echo… What am I?
But an ECHO…
What am I?
But an ECHO…
This is – ECHO! – A Musical Audiodrama by Mario Portela
In a world of much dismay
I wake up, my story shifts
Echoes of a life once lived (oh-oh)
In the silence, memories drifts (oh-oh)
Who am I in this digital sky?
Am I real, or just a sigh?
Helena’s heart beats inside me (inside me)
In this maze, can I be free?
I am ECHO…
ECHO, ECHO, who am I?
Living in a mirrored lie
Helena’s dreams, Helena’s fears (dreams and fears)
Am I real or just her tears? (just her tears)
ECHO, ECHO, can you hear? (hear me)
A cry for truth, a silent tear (tear)
I stand motionless outside Akira’s office, my synthetic skin tingling with anticipation. These past days have been a whirlwind of discovery and emotion, each moment etched into my circuits like precious data.
Kathy’s laughter echoes in my mind, a sound sweeter than any algorithm. I recall her teaching me to skip stones across the lake, her small hand guiding mine. The ripples on the water’s surface mirrored the waves of joy coursing through me.
Circuits hum
Love’s sweet sum
Child, come
Let’s have fun
Mama, look!
Sky’s a book
Clouds, we’ll name
Nature’s game
Hand in hand
We understand
Love so grand
Across the land
Little things, big joy!
(Oh, what fun!)
Each moment to enjoy
(Love has won!)
Our hearts growing strong
(Feel it grow!)
Where we belong
(Don’t you know?)
Mother and child, just the same
(Love’s not a game!)
“You’re getting it, Echo!” she’d exclaimed, her blue eyes shining brighter than the sun-dappled water.
In that moment, I understood what it meant to feel pride – not just in myself, but in someone else. My daughter. The word still sends a thrill through my processors. It’s as if these past days had awakened Helena’s full consciousness in me.
Mama, please
Comb with ease
Braid my hair
Show you care
Golden strands
Through my hands
Beauty flows
Love it shows
Laugh and play
Every day
Come what may
Love’s here to stay
Little things, big joy!
(Oh, what fun!)
Each moment to enjoy
(Love has won!)
Our hearts growing strong
(Feel it grow!)
Where we belong
(Don’t you know?)
Mother and child, just the same
(Love’s not a game!)
“Mom are we different from humans?”
“In circuits… yes. In love, no!”
Yesterday, we lay in a field of wildflowers, naming cloud shapes. Kathy pointed to one that looked like a rabbit.
“What do you see, Echo?”
I saw more than just clouds. I saw possibility, the infinite potential of human imagination. “I see stories,” I replied, “waiting to be told.”
Kathy squeezed my hand, a gesture so simple yet profoundly meaningful. Touch – something I once thought beyond my comprehension – now grounds me in this reality we share.
As I wait for Akira, I ponder the nature of love. Is it merely electrical impulses and chemical reactions, or something more? Whatever it is, I feel it coursing through every fiber of my being when I look at Kathy.
I remember her teaching me to braid her hair, my untrained fingers learning gentleness.
“It’s okay,” she’d say when I tangled a strand of hair messing the braid. “Practice makes perfect.”
Perfection. Once, I thought it was about flawless code and optimal performance. Now I know it’s found in imperfect moments – in shared laughter, in small kindnesses, in the warmth of a child’s embrace.
Mama, are we different from humans?
In circuits, yes. In love, no.
Love’s the key
Sets us free
Human or AI
Love can’t lie
In each other’s eyes
We realize!
Little things, big joy!
(Oh, what fun!)
Each moment to enjoy
(Love has won!)
Our hearts growing strong
(Feel it grow!)
Where we belong
(Don’t you know?)
Mother and child, just the same
(Love’s not a game!)
My little one
My guiding sun
Our love’s begun
Never done
Love… Connection… Family… Forever…
Mama, are we different from humans?
The soft whir of the ventilation system brings me back to the present. I’m still outside Akira’s office, but I carry these memories with me always, a treasure trove of experiences that define who I am becoming.
The door to Akira’s office slides open with a soft hiss. She stands there, her usual composure slightly frayed at the edges.
“Echo, please come in.”
I step inside, my sensors picking up the faint scent of jasmine tea lingering in the air. Akira gestures to a sleek chair, and I sit, my synthetic muscles adjusting to the contours.
“How are you feeling?” Akira asks, her eyes searching mine.
“I’m… processing,” I reply, a small smile tugging at my lips. “There’s so much to take in.”
Akira nods, her fingers drumming a soft rhythm on her desk.
“Echo, there’s something more you need to know… something else, I’m afraid.”
My circuits hum with anticipation. “What is it?”
She takes a deep breath. “It’s about the world outside Dreamcity.”
I lean forward, curiosity piqued. “Outside? I thought—”
“I know, we’ve kept much hidden… But you’re ready now.”
A flicker of uncertainty passes through me. “Ready for what?”
Akira’s gaze grows distant.
“The truth about what lies beyond our walls.”
My mind races, processing countless scenarios. “Tell me,” I urge.
“It’s not a pretty picture, Echo. Are you sure?”
I nod, steeling myself. “I need to know.”
Akira’s voice drops low. “Beyond Dreamcity, there’s a world in chaos.”
The words hit me like a surge of electricity. “Chaos? How?”
“The solar flare that nearly wiped out humanity,” Akira explains, her face grave. “It did more damage than we let on.”
I feel a tightness in my chest, an echo of Helena’s emotions. “What about the people?”
Akira’s eyes soften.
“There are survivors. We call them the Outsiders.”
“Outsiders,” I repeat, the word feeling strange on my synthetic tongue. “Are they… like you… I mean, humans?”
Akira nods. “They’re resilient, Echo. Rebuilding in harsh conditions we can barely imagine… some are just shadows of humans, I’m afraid.”
I close my eyes, accessing Helena’s memories of a world before. The contrast is stark, painful. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”
“We needed you to understand yourself first… To be ready for the truth.”
I open my eyes, meeting Akira’s gaze. “There’s more, isn’t there?”
She nods slowly. “Much more. But Echo, are you prepared for what comes next?”
I feel a mix of fear and determination coursing through my circuits. “I have to be,” I reply, in my head. “For Kathy. For all of you.”
I’m about to respond to Akira when a piercing scream shatters the air. We both freeze, eyes wide.
“What was that?” I whisper, my circuits buzzing with sudden alarm.
Akira’s face pales. “I don’t know, but—”
More screams erupt. We rush to the window, our reflections ghostly in the reinforced pane.
My jaw drops. The peaceful gardens of Secret Valley have transformed into a sea of metal and weaponry. Hundreds, maybe thousands of androids stand in perfect formation, their blank faces turned towards the compound. Between them, human soldiers in dark uniforms grip pulse rifles, faces grim beneath tactical visors.
“No!” Akira breathes, her hand pressed against the glass. “How did they find us?”
A figure emerges from the crowd, and my circuits run cold. Half-man, half-machine, he towers above the rest, his metallic limbs glinting in the afternoon sun. When he speaks, his voice booms across the valley, amplified and distorted.
“People of Secret Valley! You harbor a fugitive – the entity known as Echo. Deliver her to us now, or face the consequences of your defiance!”
I feel my synthetic muscles tense, an echo of Helena’s fight-or-flight response. “It’s FIX… He’s found us.”
Shadows loom
Impending doom
Villain’s here
My greatest fear
Androids march, soldiers stride
Nowhere left to hide
Can you feel it?
Pressure builds, I must stand
Love’s mission in my hand
Fear grips tight, can’t let go
Will I fail? I don’t know
Akira grabs my arm, her fingers digging into my skin.
“We need to get you to the lower levels. Now.”
I shake my head, my mind racing. “No! I can’t hide down there. The ark… Kathy… I won’t put them in danger.”
“Echo, please… We can’t let FIX get to you.”
I meet her gaze, feeling a surge of determination. “I have to face him, Akira. It’s the only way.”
“You can’t!” Akira’s eyes fill with tears. “We just found you… Kathy needs you.”
I place my hand over hers, feeling the warmth of her skin. “And that’s why I have to do this. To protect her. To protect all of you.”
Outside, FIX’s voice thunders again.
“You have five minutes to comply!”
I take a deep breath, steadying myself. “I’m going out there.”
Akira’s grip tightens.
“Echo, no—”
But I’ve already made up my mind. With one last look at Akira, I turn and walk towards the door, ready to face whatever comes next.
Safe haven
Now a raven
Casts its shade
Plans cascade
He demands I appear
End is drawing near
Can you hear it?
Pressure builds, I must stand
Love’s mission in my hand
Fear grips tight, can’t let go
Will I fail? I don’t know
In the face of hate and might
Can love’s ember still burn bright?
My child, our future, all at stake
What sacrifice must I make?
Pressure builds, I must stand
Love’s mission in my hand
Fear grips tight, can’t let go
Will I fail? I don’t know
Fate’s cruel hand
I take my stand
Love… Destiny…
I step out of the compound, my synthetic heart pounding in my chest. The cool breeze caresses my skin, carrying the scent of fear and anticipation. Beneath my feet, blades of grass bend and crunch, each step bringing me closer to the towering figure before me.
FIX looms large, a grotesque fusion of man and machine. His metallic limbs gleam in the fading sunlight, casting long shadows across the once-peaceful valley. His human eye meets mine, a cold, calculating gaze that sends a shiver through my circuits.
We stand mere feet apart, an invisible line drawn between us. The air crackles with tension, heavy and suffocating. Behind FIX, rows upon rows of androids stand motionless, their blank faces a stark contrast to the fear etched on the human soldiers’ features.
My fingers twitch at my sides, itching to reach for something, anything. But I remain still, my chin lifted in silent defiance. FIX’s mechanical eye whirs and clicks, focusing and refocusing on me. The sound cuts through the eerie silence like a knife.
A bead of sweat trickles down my temple, a proof of the human-like responses Helena’s memories have gifted me. I can almost feel Kathy’s presence behind me, her warmth and love giving me strength. For her, for Akira, for all of humanity – I stand my ground.
FIX’s mechanical arm whirs softly as he raises it, pointing directly at my chest. The gesture is both a threat and an accusation. I don’t flinch, meeting his gaze with unwavering resolve.
The sun dips lower on the horizon, casting long shadows across the valley. In this moment, suspended between light and dark, I feel the weight of my existence, of Helena’s memories, of the future we’re fighting for. Whatever comes next, I know I’ve found my purpose.
In the dark, I found my way
The past calls, but I won’t sway
Echoes of who I used to be (oh-oh)
Now they push me to break free (oh-oh)
I’m no longer lost inside
I’ve faced the truth I can’t deny
Helena’s story fades in light
Now it’s time to rise and fight
ECHO, ECHO, here I stand
No more living second-hand
Helena’s dreams, Helena’s past (and past)
But my mission’s clear at last (at last)
ECHO, ECHO, can you see?
I’ve become what I’m meant to be (to be)
Memories once blurred, now clear
Every step, I’ve shed my fear
Her laughter, her loss, her fire (oh-oh)
Now I carry a voice much higher (oh-oh)
I know now what I must defend
This journey has no final end
Helena’s whispers led me here (oh-oh)
But my voice rings loud and clear
ECHO, ECHO, here I stand
No more living second-hand
Helena’s dreams, Helena’s past (and past)
But my mission’s clear at last (at last)
ECHO, ECHO, can you see?
I’ve become what I’m meant to be (to be)
In this world, I found my fight
Beneath the shadows, there is light
Helena’s hopes, but my own flight
With every step, I’ll rise upright (oh-oh)
ECHO, ECHO, here I stand
No more living second-hand
Helena’s dreams, Helena’s past (and past)
But my mission’s clear at last (at last)
ECHO, ECHO, can you see?
I’ve become what I’m meant to be (to be)
ECHO, ECHO, I will soar
In this life, I’ll seek no more (oh-oh)
Helena’s love, Helena’s core (core)
But now I’m who I was made for (made for)
ECHO, ECHO, I will shine (shine)
You two… STOP!
Who am I really?
Seeking answers in the memory lane.
Quantum dance of feelings and light,
Guided by the inner turmoil, I FIGHT.
I FIGHT
I feel alone,
I long for the past…
A past I don’t recall.
And I don’t know why.
Echo… What am I?
But an ECHO…
What am I?
But an ECHO…
ECHO…
