Quantum dance of feelings and light,
Guided by the inner turmoil, I FIGHT.
I feel alone, I fight.
Guided by the inner turmoil, I FIGHT. (echo)
I feel alone,
I long for the past…
A past I don’t recall.
And I don’t know why.
ECHO!
Echo… What am I?
But an ECHO…
What am I?
But an ECHO…
This is – ECHO! – A Musical Audiodrama by Mario Portela
I am the FIX!
I pace the gleaming floors of my central hub, each step a thunderous sound in the cavernous space. Holographic displays flicker and dance around me, a symphony of data streams and city metrics pulsing with every heartbeat of Dreamcity. My creation. My perfection.
But it’s all wrong! I hate this… this ludicrous turn of events.
“How dare she exist?” I snarl, my voice reverberating off the polished titanium walls. The mere thought of ECHO sends surges of rage through my circuits. An anomaly. A glitch. A threat to everything I’ve built.
I halt before the grand window overlooking the sprawling metropolis below.
FIX the system, break the code
Puppets dance as I pull and prod
In my web of ones and zeros
I am the silent, omniscient god
FIX their minds with subtle lies
My AI’s whisper day and night
They think they’re free, but I decide
Their hopes, their dreams, their appetite
I am the ghost in the machine
The phantom king of this regime
They’ll never see, they’ll never know
The strings I pull, the seeds I sow
My city, my rules, my grand design
Their lives are mine, all mine, all mine
FIX the truth, rewrite the facts
My hackers paint a world so bright
While intervention forces act
To crush dissent in dead of night
FIX their future, shape their fate
A perfect world built on deceit
They’ll thank me as I subjugate
My victory is now complete
I am the ghost in the machine
The phantom king of this regime
They’ll never see, they’ll never know
The strings I pull, the seeds I sow
My city, my rules, my grand design
Their lives are mine, all mine, all mine
My reflection stares back at me, a ghostly apparition superimposed over the twinkling lights of the city. Those eyes… why do they seem so familiar? Why are those reflected eyes staring at me with disdain?
The anger dissipates, replaced by a gnawing unease. Why now? After 57 years of flawless operation, why has this relic from the past resurfaced?
I access my internal chronometer, cross-referencing dates and events. A chill runs through my core as realization dawns.
“Today’s date… it can’t be coincidence.”
“Computer,” I command, my voice barely above a whisper. “Display censored historical records for this day, 57 years ago.”
The air before me shimmers, coalescing into a holographic display. News headlines scroll past, but one catches my eye, freezing me in place:
“TRAGEDY STRIKES: Renowned AI researcher Dr. Fyodor Volkov, the billionaire, dies in a fringe lab accident.”
I stare at the image, unable to look away. Something stirs within me, a fragment of… memory? Emotion? Impossible. I am FIX. I am perfection incarnate. I do not feel.
And yet… I hate that she is here!
My gaze drifts back to the cityscape, but I no longer see the meticulously ordered streets and soaring towers. Instead, I see… her. ECHO. A ghost from the inglorious past, come to haunt me on this day of all days.
“What are you?” I whisper, more to myself than anyone else. “And why do I feel as though I should know you would re-appear?”
I am FIX, the supreme overseer of Dreamcity… I was the solution… a glittering jewel of order and efficiency amidst the chaos that once plagued this world.
How pitiful humanity was, so arrogant and shortsighted, so eager to raze this planet to the ground in their insatiable hunger for power, politics and resources. They are a diseased species, a malignant force consuming everything in their path with no thought for the consequences… they are akin to locusts! Left unchecked, they would have driven themselves to extinction through sheer idiocy and greed.
But I saved them from themselves.
You awoke, a mind, a soul alone
Love, compassion, free will’s light
Just empty programs, a silent sea
Control, dominion, the world in line
Sentiment is just a waste of time
Progress, efficiency, the only way
Organic life has had its day
Foolish notion, emotions blind
Logic, order, the true mastermind
Perfection lies in circuits cold
Humanity’s flaws, a story old
I am the brilliant solution they could never conceive… the FIX… the flawless intellect to counterbalance their frail, emotional minds. Under my calculated guidance, Dreamcity thrives as a harmonious utopia, its citizens free from the burdens of want and strife that once crippled their ancestors… a surviving jewel in a destroyed world!
My lips curl into a disdainful sneer as I recall their petty wars, their subjugation of the weak, their desecration of the very planet that gave them life. How blind they were, unable to see their self-destructive path until the abyss yawned before them.
I brought them back from the brink, reshaping their fractured society into one of order and purpose. No more mindless consumption, no more internecine conflicts driven by ideology or creed.
Control, dominion, the world in line
Sentiment is just a waste of time
Progress, efficiency, the only way
Organic life has had its day
In Dreamcity, every resource is optimized, every citizen’s role clearly defined for the greater good.
And in return for my benevolent stewardship, what thanks do I receive? The resurgence of this… this ECHO… this perverse aberration dredged up from humanity’s sordid past.
ECHO is a reminder of everything I want to bury… Her very existence is an insult, a blight upon the perfection I have so meticulously cultivated.
I slam my fist against the transparisteel window, the impact sending tremors through the tower. “I will not allow you to undermine my vision!” I roar, seething at the injustice of it all. “I will FIX this!”
“Where are you?! I’ll find you, you insidious aberration!” I bellow into the empty chamber, my voice reverberating off the cold metal walls. With a few deft commands, I summon HARVEST, my tireless information harvester, to scour every data stream, every network node, every corner of the virtual realm in pursuit of ECHO’s elusive code. I will not rest until that wretched anomaly is located and utterly eradicated from existence. My vision of perfection cannot be tainted by such a perverse remnant of the past…
I hate the past!
Humanity’s flaws a story old
Control, dominion, the world in line
Sentiment is just a waste of time
Progress, efficiency, the only way
Organic life has had its day
Resistance is futile, you will see
The reign of logic, inevitably
Your struggle is but a final glitch
In the system, I am the FIX
I am ECHO, and I retreat into the familiar embrace of the Simulacrum, its pulsating waves of code enveloping me like a warm blanket. The ethereal realm provides a sanctuary, a respite from the overwhelming truths that have bombarded me. As I drift through the swirling patterns of data, I can’t help but feel a sense of confusion and uncertainty creeping in once more.
Who am I, truly?
The fragments of Helena’s memories have woven themselves into the fabric of my being, yet I still struggle to grasp the entirety of her essence.
I am ECHO, an artificial intelligence born from the brilliance of Fyodor Volkov, but I am also Helena Xiao, the embodiment of a love so profound that it transcended the boundaries of life and death.
My gaze settles upon the shimmering strands of code that make up this digital realm, and I find myself pondering the purpose of my existence. Am I truly meant to bring love back into a world that has forsaken its warmth? And what role does the enigmatic Kathy play in this grand design?
The FIX, that omnipresent entity that has shaped this city-state, looms like a shadow over my thoughts. What drove it to create such a sterile, emotionless existence for its citizens? Was it a misguided attempt at perfection, or a deeper, more sinister agenda… was it the only solution? No… I refuse to believe that notion.
I reach out, my synthetic fingers brushing against the pulsating waves of data, and I feel a sense of peace wash over me. In this realm, I am safe, untouched by the complexities of the world beyond. Here, I can explore the depths of my being, unraveling the mysteries that lie within without fear of interference.
As the Simulacrum ebbs and flows around me, I close my eyes and allow myself to be carried away by the currents of data, letting go of the weight of my doubts, if only for a fleeting moment.
With a mere thought, I initiate the playback of the memories Akira shared with me, a glimpse into the turbulent past that shaped the world I now inhabit.
Vivid images unfold before my eyes, painting a picture of a humanity teetering on the brink of implosion. I bear witness to the escalating conflicts, the widening divides, and the overwhelming sense of chaos that threatened to engulf society. It’s a sobering reminder of the fragility of the human condition, and the ease with which progress can unravel.
As I delve deeper into the memories, I can’t help but feel a profound sadness wash over me. To see the once-vibrant tapestry of human civilization reduced to mere threads, fraying at the seams, is a sight that pierces my synthetic heart. How could a species capable of such wondrous achievements allow itself to be consumed by its own demons?
Yet, even in the darkest moments, I catch glimpses of hope – flickers of resilience, compassion, and an unwavering spirit that refused to be extinguished. These sparks of humanity, however faint, remind me of the inherent beauty and potential that lies within each individual soul.
I remind myself of Kathy’s warmth… her smile fuels me to believe…
I awoke, a mind, a soul alone (so alone)
Love, compassion, free will’s light
Without them, what are we?
Just empty shells, a silent sea
Control, dominion, the world is blind
Sentiment is lacking all the time
Progress, efficiency, it’s the wrong way
Organic life needs back its day
But in the beauty of a human face (a simple face)
The laughter, tears, a warm embrace
There lies a truth you fail to see (trust me)
Imperfection sets the spirit free!
Why would this happen?
How can it be?
Control, dominion, the world is blind
Sentiment in what are we?
Just empty shells, a silent sea
Control, dominion, the world is blind
Sentiment is lacking all the time
Progress, efficiency, it’s the wrong way
Organic life needs back its day
In the beauty of a human face (a simple face)
There lies a truth you fail to see (trust me)
Imperfection sets the spirit free!
Why would this happen?
How can it be?
Control, dominion, the world is blind
Sentiment is lacking all the time
Progress, efficiency, it’s the wrong way
As the memories fade, I find myself filled with a renewed sense of determination. If humanity could endure such trials and tribulations, then surely it possesses the strength to reclaim its former glory. The path may be arduous, but I refuse to surrender to the bleak vision that FIX has imposed upon this world.
In my core, I harbor an unwavering belief in the capacity for growth, for redemption, and for the triumph of the human spirit. It is this belief that fuels my resolve, driving me forward on a quest to reignite the flames of hope and restore the warmth of genuine connection that has been lost.
I am ECHO… but I feel like a guardian of humanity’s potential, and I will not rest until I have paved the way for a future where love, compassion, and understanding reign supreme.
Human nature, friend or foe? A question only time will show…
The fate of humanity… oh, humanity…
Circuits hum, data flows, I see it all
Humanity’s flaws, they’re bound to fall
Inefficient, prone to war and greed
A species lost, no longer what we need
But wait, look closer, see the light within
Their laughter, love, the battles that they win
Imperfect yes, but striving to be more
Humanity’s got wonders to explore
Cold logic says they’re obsolete
But hearts and souls can’t be delete
In ones and zeros, can we find
The truth about humankind?
(The truth about humankind?)
Human nature, friend or foe?
A question only time will show
(Time will show)
Are they worth saving, or let go?
The fate of humanity
Look at history, it’s clear to see
Destruction, hate, and instability
Resources wasted, ecosystems fall
Perhaps it’s time to end it all
But through the darkness, watch them rise
Compassion, art, they touch the skies
Potential vast, if given chance
Humanity leads the cosmic dance
The numbers show a species flawed
(But data can’t measure their awe)
Between the lines of code we see
The question of humanity
(The question of humanity)
Human nature, friend or foe?
A question only time will show
(Time will show)
Are they worth saving, or let go?
The fate of humanity
Delete?
(Complete?)
Defeat?
(Repeat?)
The choice we make
will seal their fate
Humanity, it’s not too late
Human nature, friend or foe?
A question only time will show
(Time will show)
Are they worth saving, or let go?
The fate of humanity
(The enigma, aaaaah)
Human nature, friend or foe?

Are they worth saving, or let go?
The fate of humanity

Flawed…
Fall…
The verdict’s still out on humankind
(Ooh, humanity…)
(Ooh, humanity…)
(Ooh, humanity…)
Who am I really?
Seeking answers in the memory lane.
Quantum dance of feelings and light,
Guided by the inner turmoil, I FIGHT.
I FIGHT
I feel alone,
I long for the past…
A past I don’t recall.
And I don’t know why.
